Black Australorp Chicken is a great chicken for the small scale farmer or homesteader. A classic dual purpose breed the Black Australorp is known for its prolific egg production. The trick with raising a dual purpose breed around the homestead is to make use of all the roosters that wont lay eggs for you. The Black Australorp is a larger framed bird with its roosters often reaching 8-10 pounds. These cockerels can be raised up to 4-6 pounds in 16-18 weeks making a fine chicken dinner for the family.
Your hens will go broody from time to time and make decent mothers often hatching out up to 12 chicks at a time. After a little fine tuning you can have your farm a great egg and meat yield for years to come.
