The Australorps are fantastic egg-layers. Light brown in complexion and of medium size, the eggs are fantastic for baking, and their yolks taste great for breakfast as well (scrambled, poached etc.).
The birds themselves are rather striking in appearance: a glossy black plumage with a viridescent tinge. In terms of personality, I would say that they are gentle and accommodating: they certainly seemed to get along well with other breeds in the yard. In my experience, they are also rarely broody, so you can expect consistent egg-laying. I don't eat my chooks, but I have also heard that they are quite a decent table-bird as well. Very little downside with this breed!
