We decided to get some Australorps after seeing some in the poultry show at a local fair. We were impressed by their size and unique color. They were black, but with a sheen that also suggested green coloring.
They are relatively quiet and easy to handle. The hens lay a surprising number of eggs given their size. The roosters can get a little aggressive as they age, if they aren't taught to respect people at a young age. When we have hatched Australorp eggs, we have found them to be very fertile.
We love the chicks because they hatch looking like little penguins.
