I bought these Black Australorps for my 8 year old's first chickens. They were hand raised in the house for the first 6 weeks. But this breed isn't for us. The hens are very skittish, my daughter is not able to pick them up. They only lay 3 eggs a week, not the 5 or 6 I thought they would. The roo is very aggressive, attacking my feet every time I open the pen. He is also aggressive with the hens. Today, after doing his manly duty with a hen, he stood on her, squishing her and wouldn't let her up until I shooed him away. The hens are a bit better foragers than the roo is, but still not very good at it. On a more postive note, the roo is a beautiful black/green color and very large. The hens are black also, but not with any green tinge to them.
