The Black Australorp is a heavy breed chicken that produces brown eggs. It has a very calm nature thanks to it's ancestry with the orpingon. It's the national chicken breed of Australia and holds the world record for the most eggs produced in a single year by any chicken. They can fill any role you need of your chicken: meat, eggs, companionship, mothering. Unfortunately the trade-off is that it's the best at none of these things. If you're looking for a first chicken the Australorp is a perfect choice, along with the Buff Orpington. The only advantage I give them over the Orpington is if you're short on space and keep your chickens in, preferably comfortable and roomy, cages the Australorp bears confinement much better than the Orpington.
