I didn't intend to raise ducks. Honest. I walked into the feed store and there was this cage of baby ducks. They were cute, yellow, and fuzzy. Okay, well I am a sucker for cute baby animals. I bought all of them and brought them home.
The ducks did very well. They managed to survive the winter. They lay quite well. Duck eggs are larger than chicken eggs and make really fluffy cakes.
The feathers work well for fly tying, as well. Duck meat is quite greasy, but the flavor is very good and it is very tender.
I recently found one of the hens nesting in an old plastic pail, in the barn. The females do tend to nest in odd places . She was surrounded by babies. It was a very cute Spring surprise.
These ducks are quite calm and docile, usually. But, mothers can be protective of their nests. Approach slowly and quietly and offer food.
