Our lovely Australian spotted ducks have become regular visitors to our home, sunning themselves on our patio most mornings, tapping their beaks on the window as soon as they see me and 'quacking' for their vegetable scraps and wild bird seed.
As these are wild ducks who nest in the reeds lining the riverbank behind our home, we know that they will never be 'ours' like our cat-kids, but I get great pleasure watching the ducks waddle up to our home, asking for a treat, and sometimes allowing me to pet their soft feathered backs.
Each spring I see a new batch of duckings following behind them in the river, gracefully gliding by, knowing that once the ducklings have matured, their mum and dad will be back on our patio, sunning themselves and asking for their morning tea.
