On our ranch in Oregon we started using Black Angus bulls on Hereford Whitefaced cows for Black Baldy calves. At that time - the 1960's - crossbred calves sold a few cents a pound higher than straight breds, and since cattle prices were low, we wanted the highest price we could get.
We then began to keep the Black Baldy heifers and breed them to Black Angus bulls. these third crosses were very good cattle, and always commanded high prices.
Black Baldies are still popular in the feedlots as they gain weight fast.
