My family had never raised pigs before and started off with two American Guineas. They are very cute when they're young and are quite friendly. Though they grow to be quite large, they remain decently friendly (especially if you have food). They were very mellow and easy going, which made it great for first time owners, as they were easy to take care of.

They are quite dirty, and cleaning up their waste is definitely not a walk in the park. Other than that, a decent experience and a good choice for a first time owner. I can't speak for meat quality or breeding.
