One major issue with this breed is that it is confused with the Easter Egger, which has some degree of Ameraucana breeding in it, and the Araucana, which has no tail and carries the lethal gene.
A true Ameraucana must come in certain colors, lays only a blue egg and will have a certain leg color of slate. They should have Pea combs, will never come from a hatchery (99% of all birds call Ameraucana, Araucana or Americana are Easter Eggers - mixed breeds), will have red ear lobes and be either:
Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver or White.
You can cross those colors and have a purebred Ameraucana, but it would not quality according the the breed standards, even in the color: Splash.
In order to purchase real Ameraucanas, you will need to go directly to a breeder.
They are friendly and easy to keep. They lay lovely eggs in different shades of light blue.
