French Alpines (and the breed American Alpine, which has been developed using a foundation of purebred imported French Alpine from the early 1900s here in the U.S.) are productive dairy animals. They are often described as "deer-like" and they are alert and if not handled can be quite "flighty" and capable of leaping fences. However, hand raised Alpines are bonded to people and quite easy to handle. Not as slow moving as Saanens typically are and not as noisy as Nubians often are, people who want a dairy breed that comes in a variety of colors often choose this breed.
