The Most Fascinating Insect...

I had a very brief but sweet encounter with a walking stick insect that I discovered on my porch. He'd been a little poked and bruised while I was trying to keep my dog away from him, so I scooped him up and kept him for a few weeks in a glass tank so he could recoup. He seemed to like the roses and rose leaves, a mild, mellow climate and a variety of moss, small branches and other shrubbery for him to hang on or hide beneath. I also used only natural light, near a window.

When it was time to let him back into the garden, I put him a safe distance in the front yard. Be sure to do this in the bright daylight. They do move faster than you think, so if you're letting one free--look out. They're on the move.
