The Monarch butterfly is a very interesting butterfly due to its migration habits but the most fun is getting the catterpillars going in a terrarium in my opinion. They don't require much care as long as they are warm and have plenty of fresh greens to munch on and the magic is in the cocoon of course.
Once they emerge it is so fascinating to watch them figure out what's what and I generally let them take off once they dried out but trying to keep them can be a challenge although they only need nectar or fruit juice, I never had much luck keeping them alive for long and so I learned to released them so they could come back in the next season and I could have more.
Butterflies are wonderful for kids in my opinion and could very well be my starting place when it came to me and animals in my life. Well, perhaps the red-wasp was my first. :)
