We are in our second year of beekeeping, now with 2 growing hives of Italian Honey Bees. Beekeeping these days is something of a challenge because there are a lot of diseases, etc working against honey bees, however with care and management ours have done well.

The older hive we started last year, and the second, a package, we started just this year. We had queen issues with it and a swarm with the older hive, but by keeping on top of things and managing the hives we have been able to bring both around and now they are growing and thriving. The honey is unlike any I have ever tasted, even from local sources. Amazing!

Beekeeping today is not a hands-off deal, and you will want the help of a mentor, a very good beekeeping book or guide, and a helpful online community, but with all of that these fascinating insects can be quite enjoyable and rewarding to keep. I swear we'd keep them just to watch them, but the honey is an even greater reward!
