a hive of bees

We bought our first package of Italian honeybees two years ago. They are calm bees. In the two years we've had them, we've only had two beestings happen--and one of those was when I accidentally sat down on a bee on the lawn! I am not sure of the health of commercially raised bees, however. We bought our bees from a retailer, and they have had trouble wintering over, even though we don't have a particularly cold climate in the Pacific Northwest. Bees can be a challenge for the new beekeeper when it comes to handling, but in all, these Italian bees have been a low-maintenance, quiet breed.
