Hermy the Hermit Crab

I had my hermit crab for a long time and I have a funny story about it. I put natural sand with sticks in my hermit crabs aquarium. They bury their stuff and it is not that much so I would just change the sand out a couple times a year. I kept a sponge with a bowl of water in the aquarium for him/her. I assumed it was a male, but I don't know. So my mother and I went to Mexico, I thought the sand was so pretty and white that I wanted to bring it home for the aquarium so I got a bag of it off the beach. Needless to say, customs going back into the US, stopped me for a bag of white sand that looked like other illegal things. We laughed about it but customs took it very seriously. They let me go and my crab had white sand for the next year. So they are a good pet, if you are not bringing them sand back in from other countries. They live a long time with the proper habitat and attention. They are just like any other animal and need social interaction. Mine was the size of my hand, so he was allowed out in the house. But handle the small ones often to get them socialized and they like friends if they have a larger habitat.
