I have owned two hermit crabs over the years, and while they were interesting creatures, I was unlucky enough to find two who preferred to stay in their shells, especially if you got anywhere near their habitat. I tried getting them out and holding them, even talking to them.. but to no avail. Feeding them was easy, but you have to make sure you provide enough water/moisture in their enclosure. Clean-up was also really easy and the cost to care for them was minimal. You can generally find a hermit crab starter kit at Petco or Petsmart that will give you the basics for your little crab. I bought my own stuff, but for $20-$25, it would have been a good buy.
If you're looking for a pet that you can teach little tricks to and watch, perhaps consider a rat? Or pet mice.
