Hardy, entertaining, but a little scary

A Caribbean hermit crab is the most entertaining pet at the lowest maintenance. We kept ours in a medium fish tank with a damp sponge and appropriate table scraps, and in return it put on a show daily. In the tank were also several decorations: an Eiffel tower, crumbling pillars, a palm tree, and a little sign that said “crab shop.” Our crab would climb the tree and methodically gnaw the leaves off with its claws. When it got bored of that, it would climb the Eiffel tower and perch at the very top. Occasionally, we would take it out and put it on the table (within a wall of dominos) or on the tile floor (with exits blocked) and watch it scuttle around. Hermit crabs move quicker than you think! These crabs are also very hardy: if kept at a proper temperature and given food and water, it can survive two weeks without maintenance. It grew bigger than expected and was actually quite loud when it tapped against the glass—a little terrifying in the middle of the night. I especially recommend this for kids interested in pets but absent-minded about care.
