The first thing I recall learning about hermit crabs is that they aren't as easy to care for as we were led to believe. My little sister and I got out hermit crabs before they stopped selling them like souvenirs in the malls and that's when we learned that they needed a heating pad and the proper amount of humidity in order to survive. Once you get the hang of it, they aren't that difficult to care for. What's sad to think about is how many of these critters were sold to people who had no idea how to care for them and just stuck them in a tank for a week or two until they died. Luckily, my father and I were keen on making sure we cared for our pets correctly. Overall, hermit crabs are gentle. They won't pinch unless they are trying not to fall off. As long as you keep your hand flat, there won't be any trouble. Our hermit crabs were perfectly comfortable with us, and it was cool to watch them move into larger shells when they had grown too large for the old ones. Due to my preference for cuddly critters, I probably wouldn't choose to have hermit crabs again but if you like your reptiles and invertebrates then they are a great choice!
