A couple of months ago our housemate decided to buy some bees for the purpose of producing honey. We have a very sustainable house which had chickens (for eggs) as well as a range of herbs growing in both of our gardens. As a result the bees were a natural addition. To date we haven't harvested any honey yet, and we have hired a beekeeper to tend to the bees once a month. We've placed the bees behind our garden shed which is located away from our house. One of my initial worries was that the bees may escape and enter the house however this concern never eventualized. All in all they are a great, low cost and low maintenance option for people looking to produce their own honey.
