Italian Honey Bees

With proper education and if kept healthy in the right environment, I believe honeybees are docile enough to be handled by all, including children. I have a 10 year old girl and a 7 year old boy, and they are actively in the keeping of our top bar hive. The temperament is great if you handle them in the proper manner, under the proper conditions. Their activity level and visibility are high when the weather is nicer (warm, sunny); they are dormant in the cold climates. Once started up, they are relatively easy to keep; you can be as hands-on as you would like, or you can go into the hive to inspect on a weekly basis, every other week, or as the bees tell you. The cost of beekeeping is dependent on the type of hive and equipment you have, it varies widely. But I firmly believe this can be done by almost everyone in almost any situation with the proper tools and education. We love our gentle, docile honeybees!
