Lady was the first horse I ever bought and I could not ride her. She was a tough little girl that, in true quarter horse style, could stop on a dime and turn in any direction on her back heels. I was certain she did this to remove me from her back.
A friend and I wanted to trail ride. I told him about her bad habits, but he wanted to ride anyway. Down to the park we went.
As I rode my thoroughbred a little ahead of Lady, I turned to catch her just throwing her rider off her back and heading back to the barn we stabled at.
Frantically, I called. I have visions of her being struck by a car or falling on the pavement as she scrambled through the streets to our barn.
As I called, "LADY!" at the top of my voice, she turned, looked at me and our thoroughbred, and amazingly and thankfully, ran to us.
As I grabbed her halter, I thought I caught a glimpse of love in her eyes I never saw before.
Then, we were best friends forever.
