Regular home vacuuming can be an effective way of removing dust mites and dander which cause pet, and human, allergies, as well as flea eggs and larvae that are on carpeting and furniture. And of course, vacuuming removes shed pet hair.
HEPA vacuum cleaners reduce the amount of airborne allergens dispersed during vacuuming. Some HEPA vacuums even come with ultraviolet (UV) lights, which a study has found disrupts dust mite and flea eggs so they do not hatch. Robotic vacuums with UV sterilization are also available.
Vacuums that are designed for households that have pets:
- are lightweight and come with attachments so they can be used on upholstered furniture as well as flooring
- have tangle-free brush rolls so that pet hair doesn't clog the brushes
