Some naturopathic health practitioners, and veterinarians, recommend an alkaline diet composed of 75% alkaline foods, and 25% acid foods. Normal tap water, with a pH of 6.5-7 is approximately neutral on the pH scale of 0 to 14. Water that is filtered with an alkaline filter has an alkaline pH of 8-11.
The theory behind an alkaline diet is that because the mammalian body's blood pH is slightly alkaline, with a normal range of 7.36-7.44, our diet and drinking water should reflect this preference. The theory is that an imbalanced, acidic diet high in animal protein, sugar, caffeine and processed foods tends to disrupt this pH balance. This robs the body of alkaline minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium and leaves animals prone to chronic and degenerative diseases.
