CranioSacral Therapy is a therapy that involves gentle touch of the cranium and spine, in an attempt to increase the strength of the "cranial rythmic impulse (CRI)" created by the rise and fall of cerebrospinal fluid. CranioSacral Therapy was developed by Dr. John Upledger, a U.S. osteopath, in the late 1970's.
CranioSacral Therapy incorporates some of the techniques practiced in cranial osteopathy, but differs by emphasizing the membranes which encase the brain and spinal cord. CranioSacral practitioners believe that the cranial rhythmic impulse affects the connective tissues linking all the bones, muscles and organs of the body. Some practitioners have adapted CranioSacral Therapy for use on pets.
