A Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity Test is used to find the most effective antibiotic to treat a bacterial infection.

In a Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity Test, a sample is taken from the infected area, and is grown in a lab. Colonies of the bacteria are then exposed to different antibiotics, and the results show if a specific medication is effective against the bacteria. Three results are possible is a Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity Test:

  • Susceptible - the antibiotic stops the growth of the bacteria
  • Resistant - the bacteria continues to grow even if the drug is present
  • Intermediate - the antibiotic works at a higher dose
