Acidophilus (lactobacillus acidophilus) is a beneficial bacteria which is found in the stomach and intestines. Some medications, such as antibiotics, kill acidophilus and can cause an imbalance of gut bacteria.
Probiotics like Acidophilus help maintain a healthy balance of “good” bacteria in the digestive tract. If normal bacteria are depleted or the balance of good and harmful bacteria is disturbed by diet, infection, antibiotic use, lifestyle changes, or stress, harmful “unfriendly” bacteria tend to proliferate and lead to gastrointestinal problems. Acidophilus is important in recolonizing the intestine during and after antibiotic use and can prevent up to 50% of infections occurring after antibiotic use.
Acidophilus that is suitable for dogs is available in powder, chewable treats, and capsules, and as an ingredient with other beneficial bacteria in dog probiotic supplements.
