Haylage is made from grasses and legumes which are pre-bloom or early flowering. Once the forage is cut, it is left to dry for less time than traditional hay, and it is then compressed and packed in thick plastic to retain moisture. Mild fermentation occurs that prevents fungal spores from developing.
Haylage is feed which is halfway between fully air-dried hay and moister, more highly fermented, large-bale wrapped silage (which is not appropriate for horses). Haylage is available both in bales and finely chopped in bags.
