One of the most common veterinary lab tests is a fecal examination. In a fecal exam, the vet places a sample of fresh stool in a container which contains a special solution (a "fecal float"). Any parasite eggs will float to the top of the solution and will then be observable when placed on a slide in a microscope.
A lab fecal exam evaluates the feces under a microscope for the presences of parasites, including worms and protozoa.
