Cytopoint (lokivetmab) | Dog Owner Ratings | RightPet

Cytopoint (lokivetmab) is a monoclonal antibody therapy which is used to quickly reduce the itch associated with canine atopic dermatitis. Cytopoint works by targeting and neutralizing interleukin (IL)-31.

Monoclonal antibodies like Cytopoint are used to try to destroy specific types of cells while causing little harm to normal cells. They recognize certain proteins that are found on the surface of particular cells - in the case of Cytopoint - interleukin (IL)-31. The monoclonal antibody recognizes the protein and 'locks' on to it (like a key in a lock). This may then trigger the body's immune system to attack the cells and can sometimes cause the cells to destroy themselves.

Cytopoint (lokivetmab) is administered as a subcutaneous injection administered at a veterinary clinic. Cytopoint reduces pruritus within 24 hours and delivers four to eight weeks of itch relief in most dogs.

Veterinarian Reviews of Cytopoint (lokivetmab)

New effective option to control itching

Cytopoint is a great addition to the arsenal of medications used for skin allergies in dogs. It consists of antibodies that neutralize inflammatory mediators in the skin to reduce itching in dogs. It is conveniently given by injection and can last for 4 weeks or more. This is helpful for pet owners that struggle to give daily oral medications. Some dogs need repeated injections, while for others one injection is enough to get them through an allergy season.

The nicest thing about Cytopoint is that it is very safe. It can be given to any dog, including those that have other diseases such as cancer. It can be combined with all other medications. There are very few side effects. Many other allergy treatments should be avoided in pets with cancer, can cause side effects, and can't be mixed with certain other medications.

The biggest downside of Cytopoint is that it won't help much by itself if the skin is very inflamed or if secondary bacterial or yeast infections are present. In these cases, additional medications will be necessary.

Not all itchy dogs respond in the same way to the medications available. Therefore it is helpful to have multiple therapy options at our disposal, and Cytopoint has been a great addition.

Alleviate the Itchiness Without a Pill

Cytopoint (lokivetmab) is an antibody that works by binding to IL-31 before it even reaches the receptors on the cells. Cytopoint is very effective and safe for dogs. It is convenient, especially for owners who do not want to “pill” their dog every day as it is an injection that can last for several weeks at a time. It can also be used for dogs under the age of 12 months, unlike a similar medication, Apoquel. It is also a great option for owners that are looking for a “non-drug” option.
