Daily home blood glucose monitoring provides a "snapshot" of how your dog's blood glucose treatment program is doing at one moment in time.
There are a number of brands of glucometers. Glucometers use an enzyme — glucose oxidase or hexokinase — that reacts with the glucose in the drop of blood on the strip that the meter reads. The reaction may produce a color change, which the meter translates into a numerical reading — the blood-glucose level, measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl). Some meters measure electric current generated by the enzyme in response to the glucose and translate that into the numerical reading.
