Ear mites are tiny, eight-legged parasites which can infest the ear canals of dogs and cats. The most common ferret ear mite is Otodectes cynotis.
Ear mites are highly contagious from pet to pet, and can cause itching and redness of the ears. Dogs with ear mites typically scratch and shake their heads incessantly, which can damage the ears and even cause hematomas.
If ear mites are not treated, secondary infections like yeast infections and skin infections can occur.
