Hairworms are parasitic roundworms that can infect poultry. The type of hairworm that infects geese is the genus Capillaria.
Poultry get hairworms (Capillariasis) by ingesting food or water contaminated with hairworm eggs, or by eating infected earthworms.
Capillaria can damage the lining of the crop and esophagus, which makes swallowing very difficult, and can result in death. can cause cause weight loss, diarrhea, and malnutrition.
