Gizzard Worms (Amidostomum spp.) are an intestinal parasite which affect aquatic fowl like geese and ducks. Amidostomum anseri is the most common species of gizzard worm.
Waterfowl can get gizzard worm (Amidostomum) by ingesting food or water contaminated with gizzard worm eggs. Birds can also get the parasite by eating infected earthworms.
Gizzard worms and larvae are found beneath the lining of the gizzard (a muscular, thick-walled part of a bird's stomach which is used for grinding food). Severe infections slow weight gain, and can cause diarrhea and anemia.
