Oscar fish are the 'hitmen' of fish. We had a large aquarium tank that contained a few other elegant, but common fish (mostly Beta). We thought they could all cohabitate. If you are considering this species of fish make sure you have a separate tank just to house them in.

Their diet is very specific (and not for the faint of heart) - they are carnivorous. The beta fish would be fed after the Oscar as they were otherwise too intimidated to come to the top of the tank. The pet shop told us that feeding them once every couple of days would be sufficient, so we put them on the same diet as the boa constrictor (frozen mice). Over time we noticed less activity in the tank, and thought our Beta fish were hiding behind the tank decor, but came to discover that the Oscar fish were eating them when we weren't home.
