When I bought my pleco, he was fairly small, only 3-4 inches. I originally had a 10 gallon tank, but then he started to grow and grown and got huge. He ended up taking up so much space most of my other fish died. Once I got a 20 gallon tank though, he seemed to stop growing and I've had the tank stable with all the fish living for over a year and a half.
Being a bottom feeder, they're very easy to care for, as it's mostly just dropping in an algae wafer every few days. I've never seen mine try to harass or attack the other fish and my tank is always clean. The biggest thing to watch out for is rapid growth after you first get them, as their size can become an issue.
I was told they only grow to what their environment can handle, but all the same, it's something to keep an eye on.
