Aka Matsuba Kois - they will outlife you, as long as you keep them healthy!

I was going through one of those phases in life, and wanted to learn something new. I had this beautiful tank system set up and a bunch of these red Matsuba Kois brought on board. Well, after an initial fighting week they became very friendly and mellow. Wow, so cool they get to know you as well and will feed off your hand, just be careful. Sadly, I had to move, had it all prepped up, to make sure temperature and all keeps steady.... - which led me to the sadly-ironic biggest mistake in recent memory: I had used a larger tank heater from another tank, totally forgetting that this will get the water too hot for sure...please don't hate me know, as I was sad myself, but upon arrival at the new house, after a couple of hours' in traffic, we literally arrived with a special Bouillabaisse, which is a delicious French fish soup....;-( the heater brought the tank almost to a boil and my worries of them poor fishies freezing to death was instead leading to fish soup. I think that it went fairly quickly and the fish propably did not suffer at all. I later on recreated the scenario without the fish, and within minutes the heater brought the much smaller tank to a near boil....they had an easy death and their souls will hopefully not haunt me much longer. Well, you live and learn. Good intentions can sometimes bring bad results as well. So - keep this in mind, next time you are moving your precious koi. They can easily sustain a bit of temperature drop (depending on where you live, ambien temperature might be good enough), but too hot is a no-go! Best, Jacob
