The demasoni cichlid is a freshwater african cichlid that can be highly territorial and aggressive. However, my husband and I have found that having lots of rocks and hiding spaces means less territory to actually defend. The key is finding the right balance of cichlids so that no one cichlid can dominate any one area.
Many people think that this means not getting too many. Often, however, people have too few meaning that the cichlids can easily claim areas in the tank as their own. This is true of the demasoni cichlid as well. I have had at least one get killed by another when I let the tank get to a point where territories were established.
In all, however, it is a hearty fish that is beautiful. I have had people mistake it for a saltwater fish due to the bright colors of the males of this species. I have recently added two more of this particular type to my tank with absolutely no issues (for a total of 4 now in a tank of about 30 total cichlids).
