Over the year's I have had many Algae Eaters, in fact because of my relatively large tank many times I have had multiple in the tank at once.

In terms of appearance I would say two things, firstly that they are ugly. Plain and simple they are not beautiful creatures. However with that said they are very interesting to watch as they eat algae, especially when their mouth is to the glass wall which you are looking at!
And lastly, they - obviously - greatly improve the beauty of the tank. So in a back-handed kind of way, they do help with appearance.

The real beauty of this creature is stated in it's name, simply that it eat's algae. If you have ever owned a fish tank before then you know that it is a pain to have to clean the tank, and especially scrub the algae off of the tank walls.
However when you have Algae Eaters they will do it for you! And not only will they clean the walls, they will also clean the rocks, plants, and decorations inside of the tank, which many times you can't get to.

Many so called "Algae Eaters" tend to only skim the Algae, leaving most of it behind, the great thing about these fish that I learned from my pet store owner is that they eat all the way down to the surface, cleaning all of the algae off.

In the end I would highly recommend this fish, it will greatly reduce the time & effort you must put in to keep a clean tank - although you still will have to clean the tank - and honestly, they are entertaining to watch.
