Easily the best tankmate for discus

The cardinal tetra - regal cousin to the sweet little neon tetra.

You cannot have a discus tank without a shoal of 40 - 50 cardinals. Sure, they're vastly more expensive than neons (at least here in South Africa), but they're slightly more sizeable and their striking neon stripe extends all the way to the tail, whereas the neon has a white-translucent patch just before the tail.

Cardinals make excellent tankmates for discus in a community aquarium, provided you ensure there are plenty of plants for them to rest and hide amongst, as very large discus will tend to try and eat them.

Do not keep in shoals of less than 15 - 20.
