The Altispinosa is a cichlid fish that looks a bit like the Ramirezi, especially when they are young (they are often confused by clerks at pet stores), but his fins and tail are more transparent. I believe it reaches a maximum size of 3 to 4 inches. He likes the water with a pH 6.8-7.0, but lives well in alkaline parameter too. To me, one of the most interesting features of this species is the way they swim, instead of swimming gently as most fish he leaps, pulling up and stopping suddenly, it looks as if he swimming “frame by frame”.
The only downside is that they fight each other a lot, appearing to be territorial - as one pursues the other (without hurting) and sometimes even kissing mouth to mouth (it’s actually the way they fight).
They like frozen food, but will not rise to the surface to eat, preferring to eat the food in the bottom. I recommend this fish for those who like small American Cichlids.
