Beta, the Betta Fish

I bought this fish from my local Meijers. I tried to be as picky as possible since some of the fish on display were dead or a bit sad looking. This fish has lasted a year now and has been doing quite well. He currently lives in my office and is a buddy during working hours. In the beginning he loved to hide but now he just hangs out and takes siestas on the fake plant in the tank.

His tank is very low maintenance. It is a one gallon bowl and I only need to clean it every two weeks since he is in the sun and his bowl grows green algae. Male bettas are known for their aggression towards other males and sometimes other fish. When I put my finger up to the glass he will try to fight me, which can be comical at times. This fish breaths by taking gulps of air from the surface and does not require a filtration system.
