I first bought a male betta for my granddaughter and she named him Fire, because he is red... Fire adjusted well to his large tank with lots of items. I would notice while at the sink he would be at the corner of his tank looking at me. If I tapped on the tank he didn't run away, but seemed to play. I'd give him a pellet of food and he would be happy. He always reminds me to feed him by making his presence known when I am near. It is as if he is begging. He follows my finger along the tank wall and plays back and forth.
I recently bought a female and at first he would puff up and try to make her hide. I'd tap on the tank and he'd stop. This little girl was not going to let him rule her. She jumped right back at him one day and they have gotten along since that time. He even lets her eat with him when I feed them.
If anyone says fish don't think, they are wrong...
I have them in a tank with no filtration system because it's not required. I change the water about once a month making sure the temperature and chemicals are just right before putting them back in. They don't like if I move anything in the tank...
They are very easy to care for and I enjoy their presence, as does my granddaughter. I think they are the easiest fish to care for that I know of.
