Betta Fish

I have had 6 betta fish in 3 years, which is relatively typical of people I know who own bettas. While bettas CAN live a long time (I've heard of up to 8 years), unless the conditions are perfect, they rarely do.

Pros and Cons:

+ Cheap: affordable to buy, food and water conditioner is cheap and lasts forever
+ Attractive: bright and lively

- Aggressive: will attack other fish and show aggression towards owner
- Need to change the water at least once a week and feed every other day at least

Fish 1 (Sapphire - 4 months): died of Velvet - which the pet store swore bettas can't get
Fish 2 (Jaws - 2 years): died of natural causes - possibly old age
Fish 3 (Horatio - 6 months): died of some parasite that ate his fins, not sure what
Fish 4 (Jack - 1 year): not very lively - died when my shelf broke and his tank fell over
Fish 5 (Arthur - 1 year): still alive, doing well, occasionally gets swim bladder disease
Fish 6 (Merlin - 1 year): still alive, doing well
