I honestly had zero interest in fish until I got my bala sharks. They were a present from my father for my 16th birthday. I put them in the tank and started researching. Once I found out how big the could get, I started getting excited. In the right conditions, these guys get well over a foot long! Mine got to about 9 inches, which is pretty big for captive balas. They aren't a difficult fish to own but they can be a little picky about their environment. I fed them a pretty good diet of high quality flakes and I gave them frozen (thawed) food as well. They really liked blood worms and I found, quite by accident, that they loved the wafers I was feeding the pleco! They grew to about 4 or 5 inches very quickly and then slowed down. Not a difficult fish to care for but you definitely want SOME experience before you get into these guys. They like loooong tanks and will spend hours just darting from one end to the other. I would put some plants or something on the ends of the tank to keep them from slamming into the glass because I had one knock himself out doing just that!
