The world’s 6,100+ lizard species form the largest of all reptile groups, and present the enthusiast with a mind-boggling array of potential pets. Ranging in size from 1.5 inches to 10+ feet in length, and exhibiting all conceivable (and some inconceivable!) lifestyles, there is a lizard to fit every experience and interest level. Giant Monitors that test the skills of zookeepers, House Geckos happy in a 5 gallon tank, peaceful vegetarians, ravenous insect, fish and rodent predators, sun-worshipers, nocturnal prowlers, and many, many more are all bred in captivity – sometimes in an array of “designer” color morphs.

Many lizards, such as the (well-named!) Rainbow Agama, sport brilliant colors, while males of other species put on elaborate breeding displays. Sometimes, their hand-waving and head-bobbing are even directed at owners…although whether they see us as potential mates or rivals is hard to say! You can plan to keep a single, hardy lizard or delve into the care of the many that still frustrate captive breeders – either way, a lifetime of wonder is open to folks interested in these spectacular creatures.
