According to legend, the rabbit was first domesticated in medieval times by French Catholic monks who classified it as fish rather than meat so that they could eat it during Lent. Over time, breeders developed dozens of varieties of rabbits suitable for food, for fur, for pets, or for the show bench.

Take your time, and pick the appropriate rabbit breed for your home. You'll have plenty of choices. The American Rabbit Breeders Association currently recognizes 49 breeds. The British Rabbit Council now recognizes 60 breeds and a stunning 500 varieties.
