The active, beautifully-patterned Sliders and their relatives are hands-down the most popularly-kept turtles in the world. One species, the Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), bred by the millions on farms in the American Southeast, has introduced generations of herp fans to reptile-keeping. Unfortunately, their needs are often not appreciated by new owners, who are usually surprised at how quickly their pets grow. However, assuming that you plan for their size and 30+ year lifespans, Sliders, Cooters and Red-Bellied Turtles can make wonderfully-responsive pets.
