Armed with an assortment of venomous spines and algae-like filaments, and sporting a fantastic range of colors, Scorpionfish are real show-stoppers – when you can see them, that is! All of the nearly 400 species are camouflage experts that lie in wait for prey that in some cases may be their equal in size. A number of smaller (4-6 inch) species are available, but due to the possibility of dangerous allergies to their venom, none should be kept by children. Some family members, such as the notorious Stonefishes, have caused fatalities, so be sure to have an expert identify any that you are considering. Scorpionfishes will eat any tank mate that they can swallow, and do not compete well for food with fast-moving fishes.
