Octopuses are, hands down, the world’s most intelligent invertebrates, consistently surprising researchers with their problem-solving abilities. While smaller species sometimes do well in captivity, most are naturally short-lived and many do not adapt to tank life. All can inflict venomous bites, with some, such as the tiny Blue-Ringed Octopus, having caused fatalities. As species identification can be difficult, it is best to leave these marvelous creatures to the pros. Squid eggs are sometimes offered for sale. Sadly, we know little of their husbandry needs, and most that hatch do not live long…they too, can deliver painful bites.
